Canvas print vs framed poster: which to choose
Share
Choose a canvas print if you want a bigger, lighter, glare-free piece with a soft, painterly feel, especially for a living room or a humid city. Choose a framed poster if you want a crisp, finished look in a smaller size for a study, bedroom, pooja corner or desk, or a neat gift that is ready to hang. If you started out searching for a canvas painting on canvas, the same question applies: a hand-painted original, a printed canvas and a framed poster each suit different walls and budgets.
What is the difference between a canvas print and a framed poster?
Both put a painting on your wall. The difference is what the image is printed on and how it is finished.
Canvas print
A canvas print is printed onto fabric and stretched over a wooden frame. There is no glass and usually no outer frame, so the image wraps the edges and sits slightly off the wall.
- Soft, matte, textured look that feels close to a painting
- No reflections, so it reads well in bright rooms
- Lighter than a framed piece of the same size
- Best for larger sizes and statement walls
Our canvases, for example, use PolyCanvas fabric stretched over a sturdy wooden frame and come ready to hang, with no extra framing needed.
Framed poster
A framed poster is a paper print set inside a frame. Ours are glossy prints on a sturdy 2 mm board, in a 1-inch black or white frame with a laminated finish.
- Sharp, clean edges and a polished, finished look
- Bright colours with a glossy shine
- Easy to place on a shelf, desk or small wall
- Best for smaller sizes, gallery walls and gifts
Canvas painting on canvas vs a printed canvas: what's the difference?
A hand-painted canvas is a one-of-a-kind object, made with oil or acrylic paint by an artist. A printed canvas reproduces an existing painting on canvas fabric, so you can own a masterpiece at a fraction of the cost of an original.
Prints have a long, proud history in Indian homes. Raja Ravi Varma, one of the first Indian artists to use oil paints, painted his gods and heroines on canvas. Then, in 1894, he set up a lithographic press in Bombay so ordinary families could hang his images too. Accounts differ on the exact neighbourhood where it began, but the press later moved to Malavli near Lonavala around 1899. Its oleographs were varnished to look like oil paintings, and they carried his Lakshmi, Saraswati and Krishna into homes across India.
So a good print is not a lesser choice. It is how much of India first came to love art on its walls.
Which looks better in an Indian living room?
Canvas painting for living room walls
For the main wall of a living room, canvas usually wins. It can go big without getting heavy, it has no glare from windows or tube lights, and its matte surface suits both modern and traditional interiors.
A few simple tips:
- Size it to the furniture. A common decorating rule of thumb is to choose art about two-thirds the width of the sofa or console below it.
- Hang it at eye level. The centre of the piece should sit roughly where a standing person looks.
- Pick one hero. A single large canvas often looks calmer than many small pieces.
A swirling night sky like Vincent van Gogh's The Starry Night as a canvas has the movement and colour to hold a big wall. Van Gogh painted it in oil on canvas in June 1889, at the asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, working from memory during the day. You can read more in our story of The Starry Night.
When a framed poster works better
Framed posters shine in tighter spots: beside a doorway, above a study table, in a corridor or as part of a gallery wall. Two or three framed pieces in matching black or white frames look tidy and deliberate.
Which format suits which room?
- Living room: Canvas for one large statement piece; framed posters for a grouped gallery wall.
- Bedroom: Either. A medium canvas above the bed feels soft and restful.
- Pooja room or corner: Framed posters often suit small pooja spaces. Raja Ravi Varma's Radha and Krishna works well here.
- Study or work desk: A small framed poster at eye level.
- Kitchen and bathroom: Neither format loves steam. If you must, hang art well away from the stove or shower.
- Coastal cities and monsoon months: Canvas generally copes with humidity better than paper, which can warp or develop spots when damp. Keep any artwork out of direct sun and off walls that get seepage.
What vastu suggests about placing wall art
Many families like to follow vastu when hanging art. These are traditional suggestions, not guarantees, and popular guides do not always agree.
- Popular vastu guides commonly suggest the north, east or north-east walls for most paintings, and the north-east is often linked with spiritual growth.
- Deity paintings are usually advised away from the south wall and not placed low near the floor.
- Saraswati is often suggested for a study, on a north or north-east wall, as she is the goddess of learning. Raja Ravi Varma's Saraswati is a gentle choice for a child's study corner.
- Flower and fruit paintings are often suggested for east-facing walls, and landscapes and nature scenes for north or east walls.
Vastu speaks about the image and the wall, not the material. Canvas and framed posters are equally fine; pick the format that suits the room.
Which is better as a gift?
Both make lovely gifts. Choose based on the person and the occasion.
- Framed poster: Easy to carry, easy to place, and feels complete straight out of the box. Good for a desk, office cabin or a first home.
- Canvas: Feels more substantial for big occasions like a housewarming or wedding, when you know the person has wall space.
For Diwali, Raja Ravi Varma's Goddess Lakshmi is a thoughtful pick in either format. For more ideas, see our guide to Diwali gift ideas: paintings with a story.
Canvas painting price: what affects it?
Prices vary widely, so it helps to know what you are paying for.
- Original or print: A hand-painted original costs far more than a print because it takes an artist's time and is one of a kind.
- Size: Bigger pieces cost more in material and handling.
- Format and finish: Framing, glazing and stretcher quality all add to the price.
- Print quality: Fade-resistant inks and a carefully restored image make a real difference over the years.

Canvas painting ideas for beginners and kids
Many people searching for canvas painting want to paint their own. That is a wonderful hobby, and it pairs well with hanging the masters for inspiration.
What is usually in a canvas painting kit?
Most beginner kits include a pre-stretched canvas or canvas board, a set of acrylic paints and a few brushes. Acrylic is popular for beginners and kids because it is water-based and dries quickly, so you can layer colours in one sitting.
Easy canvas painting ideas to try
- Night sky swirls: Practise Van Gogh-style brushstrokes with blues, yellows and white.
- A single flower or fruit: Simple shapes, bold colours, great for kids.
- A simple landscape: Sky, hills and a river in three or four colours.
- A lotus or diya: Easy festive motifs for Diwali decor.
Painting your own and hanging a print side by side can make a lovely, personal wall.
Questions people ask
Is canvas better than a framed poster?
Neither is better overall. Canvas suits large, glare-free statement walls and humid rooms; framed posters suit smaller spaces, gallery walls and easy gifting.
Does a canvas print need a frame?
No. A stretched canvas is already mounted on a wooden frame and is ready to hang as it is.
Which lasts longer in Indian weather?
Canvas generally handles humidity better than paper. With either format, avoid direct sunlight, damp walls and steam.
Which is best for a pooja room?
A small framed poster often fits a pooja space best. Many vastu guides suggest the north-east, east or north wall for deity images.
What size wall art should I buy for a living room?
A common rule of thumb is about two-thirds the width of the sofa or console below. Larger canvases suit big, empty walls.
Is a printed canvas the same as a canvas painting?
No. A canvas painting is hand-painted and unique; a printed canvas reproduces an existing artwork on canvas fabric.
