The Story Behind the Painting
Green River Cliffs, Wyoming
Thomas Moran·1881
Moran's first sight of the American West was not Yellowstone but a wall of striped cliffs above a railway town. Ten years later he painted them glowing in the low sun and quietly erased the town, the tracks and the bridge that had brought him there. The result became the finest of his many Green River pictures.
